After successfully completing my A Levels and a Foundation course in Art & Design in my hometown of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, I moved to Blackpool to study on the BA (Hons) Photography course at Blackpool & The Fylde School of Art & Design. In July 2006, I was awarded the Mary Elizabeth Barrow scholarship to study on the MA Visual Design as Creative Practice postgraduate course. Inspired by Blackpool's unique character, cultural heritage and rich history I began a documentary photography project entitled 'Blackpool: An Unimagined Space?’. Central to my approach was my desire to not only challenge perceptions of this iconic seaside resort, but to celebrate the principles and practice of documentary photography.
As a professional freelance photographer I'm commissioned by clients in a variety of creative roles. I've held the position of Senior Photographer and Image Retoucher for an investment gold and jewellery business in south shore Blackpool since 2006, where I shoot still life photography of high value products. I also manage a vast image library, consult on copyright issues and mentor a junior photographer.
My freelance commissions include photographing public artworks for Blackpool Council, documenting life at the Rigby Road Transport Depot for a local author, working with the community-based arts project Bloomfield Talks and a three-day artist residency for NALGAO's annual conference. In September 2009, I was selected to be a Photographer in Residence at the University of Central Lancashire (a scheme run by UCLAN and the Lancashire Artists Network) and subsequently contracted to teach as an Associate Lecturer in Photography.
My photographs have featured in a number of national and internationally renowned photography exhibitions and awards. These include being shortlisted and commissioned by LDC's This Working Life 2007, announced as the overall winner of Keele University's Three Counties Open Photography Competition 2008 and featuring in CIWEM's Environmental Photographer of The Year 2008 exhibition.
In 2009, I was announced as the third place finalist in the 'Fine Art - Natural History' professional category of the Sony World Photography Awards with a selection of four photographs from my series 'Starlings Above'. The project aims to capture the innate beauty of starlings in flight as they form hypnotic shapes and patterns in the sky above. The work received a positive response and was published in the Sony World Photography Awards book and showcased on a global exhibition tour.
