Winter Gardens Refurbishment

Blackpool Winter Gardens Interior

In November 2010 work began on restoring Blackpool’s Grade-II listed Winter Gardens back to it’s original Art Deco glory. Blackpool Council appointed architects Donald Insall Associates to begin phase one of a restoration process that will take a number of years to complete. The Floral Hall and iconic dome was completed earlier this month, so I thought I’d head down with my camera to take a look.

The Winter Gardens is a historical important and iconic building that attracts a huge number of tourists to the resort every year. I’ve attended conferences, gigs and shows in this fantastic venue and I’ve always enjoyed photographing it’s intricate architectural detail and warm atmosphere.

The Big Freeze

The Big Freeze #1 By Yannick Dixon Photographic Works

December 2010 is the month that residents of the United Kingdom will remember as The Big Freeze. Freezing cold temperatures and heavy snowfall has resulted in travel chaos across the country and transformed the look of our town’s and cities. I’ve lived by the seaside for the past seven years and I’ve never seen this amount of snow fall on the Fylde coast.

Early on Saturday morning I walked around Ashton Gardens and the sand dunes in Lytham St. Annes to photograph the freshly fallen blanket of snow and make the most of the light. I spent around three hours carefully walking in the snow (it pays to be extra vigilant when you have a Canon 5D Mark II around your neck at the best of times) and enjoyed photographing nature at it’s finest.

Médina of Marrakech

Médina of Marrakech

Earlier this month I travelled to Marrakech with my family to celebrate my Mum’s 50th birthday. Despite a small glitch with the flight being cancelled at Manchester airport (due to Spanish air traffic controllers going on strike)

We had the choice to either cancel the trip entirely or get ourselves to Gatwick airport and fly at 7am in the following morning. Thankfully, we choose the latter and spent the following three days having the best time in the Médina of Marrakech.

Coast Magazine

Coast Magazine Picture This Feature Starlings Above

Last month I was contacted by Coast Magazine’s picture editor Suzy Koo about featuring one of my photographs from the Starlings Above series in the October 2010 edition of the magazine.

Each month, Coast Magazine run a photography feature that showcases the work of a different photographer and I was truly delighted to be asked.

I sent over a couple of photographs from the series to Suzy and her editor Clare Gogerty and they decided to feature my photograph of starlings flocking around Central Pier’s Big Wheel in Blackpool. As you can see in the photograph above, the image runs full bleed over a double page spread and includes a short biography on the story behind the image and a link to my photography website.
