Starling Murmurations In Blackpool

Starling Murmurations In Blackpool - Wildlife Photography By Yannick Dixon

Have you ever witnessed a starling murmuration? I’m utterly hypnotised whenever I see a murmuration of starlings and, some may say, obsessed with documenting the behaviour of these gregarious birds as they flock to Blackpool in vast numbers to roost during the autumn and winter months.

Over the past eight years I’ve captured countless murmurations for my award-winning wildlife photography series Starlings Above, and now, with the starlings season already underway, I thought it was time to share a selection of my latest photos and video footage of starling murmurations in Blackpool.

Coast Magazine

Coast Magazine Picture This Feature Starlings Above

Last month I was contacted by Coast Magazine’s picture editor Suzy Koo about featuring one of my photographs from the Starlings Above series in the October 2010 edition of the magazine.

Each month, Coast Magazine run a photography feature that showcases the work of a different photographer and I was truly delighted to be asked.

I sent over a couple of photographs from the series to Suzy and her editor Clare Gogerty and they decided to feature my photograph of starlings flocking around Central Pier’s Big Wheel in Blackpool. As you can see in the photograph above, the image runs full bleed over a double page spread and includes a short biography on the story behind the image and a link to my photography website.

British Wildlife Photography Awards 2010

British Wildlife Photography Awards

Earlier this week I received an email notifying me that I’ve been shortlisted in the British Wildlife Photography Awards 2010.

This “international photography competition, the BWPA was established to celebrate and recognise the talents of photographers of all nationalities practicing in the UK, while at the same time highlight the great wealth and diversity of British natural history.

At a time when we’re increasingly conscious of the importance of wildlife, habitat and conservation, the Awards encourage photographers, whether professional or enthusiast, to explore Britain’s natural and urban environments, and discover its bounty of wildlife, from birds to mammals, insects to marine life”.

Murmurations

Murmurations is a short film is inspired by my documentary photography project Starlings Above which won third place in the Fine Art – Natural History professional category of the Sony World Photography Awards 2009. This short film was captured using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM in Blackpool between December 2009 to January 2010.

The music is entitled ‘On The Clock Face’ and is kindly used courtesy of Raikes Parade.
