Blackpool Illuminations

Astronaut - Blackpool Illuminations 2014 Photography

Blackpool Illuminations is a world-renowned festival of light founded in 1879 (a year before Thomas Edison patented the electric light bulb) and held each autumn on the Fylde coast in Lancashire.

Stretching over six miles of Blackpool’s famous promenade, from Starr Gate to Bispham, the Illuminations are a remarkable sight to behold. VisitBlackpool once described Blackpool Illuminations as “the greatest free light show on earth” and with over 3.5 million visitors now flocking to the resort to enjoy their colourful glow they might be right. Working as a photographer in Blackpool who lives locally in nearby Lytham St Annes I have the pleasure of photographing this spectacular Lights Festival each and every year.

Welcome To The Golden Mile

Welcome To The Golden Mile By Yannick Dixon Photographic Works

Each month I’m offering limited edition prints of photographs recently added to my portfolio. I often receive emails from art buyers regarding print sales and I thought that a print of the month is a good way for collectors to get their hands on my work at discounted prices.

Each print measures 17” x 11” and printed by myself on Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper using a Canon Pixma 9000 Mark II. There will only be 25 prints produced of each monthly photograph and it will be signed, sealed and delivered to you.

I love street photography, but what do you call photographs taken on the promenade? Promenade photography? It doesn’t quite seem to have the same ring to it does it?! Well this month’s ‘print of the month’ is an example of the kind of candid photography I love shooting.

Blackpool Revellers

Blackpool Revellers By Professional Photographer Yannick Dixon

This photograph entitled Blackpool Revellers is semi-inspired by the article Personal Projects Can Make A Difference written by Grant Scott for Professional Photographer magazine as it inspired me to take a closer look at the current direction of my photographic practice and, more importantly, to continue shooting new images for my personal projects. Like many photographers, personal work is the driving force behind my creative inclinations and an important aspect of any artistic practice.

The Living Statue

Living Statue In Blackpool

Walk along the promenade near Blackpool’s Central Pier and you’re likely to encounter a living statue, one of a number of street performers providing light entertainment for the tourists.

Blackpool is synonymous with providing popular entertainment for the masses, but I want to explore what is available on street level (there is more to the town’s ‘pleasure identity’ than The Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower).

This location around Central Pier is a popular hot spot for local street vendors, performers and beggars as there are usually many passers-by along the promenade.
