Starling Murmurations In Blackpool

Starling Murmurations In Blackpool - Wildlife Photography By Yannick Dixon

Have you ever witnessed a starling murmuration? I’m utterly hypnotised whenever I see a murmuration of starlings and, some may say, obsessed with documenting the behaviour of these gregarious birds as they flock to Blackpool in vast numbers to roost during the autumn and winter months.

Over the past eight years I’ve captured countless murmurations for my award-winning wildlife photography series Starlings Above, and now, with the starlings season already underway, I thought it was time to share a selection of my latest photos and video footage of starling murmurations in Blackpool.

Photography Review of 2014

Photography Review of 2014 Blog Montage

We’re just seven days into 2015 and perhaps, like me, your back at work busy planning for the year ahead and, just as importantly, wondering if there’s any Christmas chocolate left.

There’s still talk of New Year’s resolutions all around, but we all know it doesn’t have to be the beginning of a New Year to give ourselves permission to pursue our dreams or make an important change in our life. Whatever you want to do, go for it and make it happen! There’s no time like the present as they say.

Having said that, before we get stuck into 2015, it does feel right to have a quick look at the past twelve months don’t you think?! My retrospective look at the past 365(ish) days is called, somewhat grandiosely, my Photography Review of 2014.

In Pictures: As The World Tipped

As The World Tipped - Photography By Yannick Dixon For LeftCoast Blackpool

LeftCoast is a one of twenty-one Creative People and Places programmes supported by Arts Council England that is delivering a pioneering programme of arts and cultural activity across Blackpool and Wyre which aims to enrich the lives of those who live, work and visit here.

As part of it’s cultural arts programme, LeftCoast in partnership with Without Walls Associate Touring Network hosted the breath-taking As The World Tipped by Wired Aerial Theatre at Blackpool Cricket Club. A truly powerful piece of world-class aerial theatre it really is great that LeftCoast brought this to Blackpool and offered it as a free event for all of Blackpool to enjoy.

I was commissioned by LeftCoast as their photographer for the Saturday performance of As The World Tipped and was hired to create an image gallery to show both audiences arriving at the Cricket Club on the night, the pre-show entertainment and As The World Tipped itself.

Glastonbury Festival 2014

Glastonbury Festival 2014

Glastonbury Festival needs no introduction. Everyone has heard of Glastonbury and everyone wants a ticket. Nobody wants to miss out on the chance to spend five hedonistic days partying, come rain or mud, on the famous Worthy Farm.

Glastonbury Festival 2014 sold out in record time (one hour and twenty-seven minutes if you must know) back in October 2013.

With more than a million people registered for the festival and only 120,000 tickets available, I’d say I was lucky to get my hands on a ticket.

I decided to take my compact camera rather than my DSLR so I could balance shooting some photography with the freedom to let loose and enjoy the festival.
